AREAS OF SPECIALTY

ANXIETY

Anxiety is a common feeling of unease, worry, or fear that can range from mild to severe. If you're experiencing symptoms like low mood, restlessness, difficulty sleeping, panic attacks, negative thoughts, or feeling easily fatigued, anxiety might be affecting your daily life. While occasional anxiety is normal, if your worries feel overwhelming, seeking professional support can help.

DEPRESSION

Depression is a mental health condition that causes lasting sadness and a loss of interest in daily life. Common signs include hopelessness, low self-esteem, trouble sleeping, and changes in appetite, and even thoughts of self-harm. Often linked with anxiety, depression is a treatable condition and therapy can be a powerful aid in overcoming it.

TRAUMA

Trauma results from exposure to an incident or series of incidents that are emotionally disturbing and life-threatening. Experiencing a traumatic event takes a physical, emotional and mental toll on us, which can make it difficult to cope with the aftermath of such events. If you are struggling with trauma or trauma-related concerns, together we can create a personalized treatment plan and find the support you need to move forward.

RELATIONSHIP CONFLICTS

Relationships aren't perfect. Common relationship issues can include poor communication, emotional unavailability, growing apart, infidelity, lack of appreciation, emotional abuse and/or intimacy issues. Whether you are struggling with dating, marital complications or separation, therapy can give you a better understanding of your behavior patterns and help you work towards becoming a better partner.

LOW SELF-ESTEEM

If you are someone who is extremely self-critical, feels inferior to others, uses negative words to describe themselves, struggles with perfectionism & procrastination, has low resilience & downplays their positive qualities, you may be struggling with low self-esteem. Living with low self-esteem can lead to problems such as anxiety and depression. Under the right guidance, therapy can be a safe space for you to explore these issues and treat them.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • Do I need to attend weekly sessions?
The standard format of therapy requires sessions to be held on a weekly basis as it helps in making gradual and steady progress. In some cases, I will agree to take two or more sessions per week if I find it beneficial for you, and if I have the availability. With time, the frequency of sessions may reduce- the sessions may take place once every couple of weeks, depending on the client’s needs and progress.
  • Do you offer pre-intake call?
Yes, I offer a free pre-intake call for all new clients. This allows us to discuss your needs and goals, and to determine if my therapy approach is the right fit for you. Please contact me to schedule your free pre-intake call. The duration of the call is 20 minutes.
  • Will you prescribe medication?
As a psychotherapist, I am not eligible to prescribe medication. In case any medication is required, you will be referred to a psychiatrist who can help you with the same.
  • What is a sliding scale?
Sliding scale is a type of fee structure which is set up for individuals with a financial constraint wanting to seek therapy. This fee structure exists to help make therapy more affordable for people living at a lower income level. The therapist sets up one sliding fee scale that is used for all their clients. If you have the ability to pay the full cost of therapy, you will be billed as per the therapist's standard fee. If you're facing any financial challenges that hinder your ability to pay, you'll be offered a reduced rate. Deciding to see a therapist to address your mental health concerns may be one of the most important decisions you ever make, and money doesn't have to be an obstacle to getting help. Please contact me in case you need to apply for a sliding scale. Please note that the sliding scale slots are limited.

Yes, the therapy sessions are completely confidential. As your therapist, I am ethically bound to keep what you share private. However, there are some exceptions to the rule of confidentiality. I may be required to report or reach out to your emergency contact in case of the following situations: Threats of harm to oneself Threats of harm to other Suspected child or elder abuse – if the client is the victim or perpetrator As your therapist, if I believe that you are in imminent danger of hurting yourself or someone else, your emergency contact/family member will be called to ensure safety. Note that therapists are obliged to have a supervisor overseeing their work to ensure they are maintaining a high level of assistance to their clients. While they might discuss the generalities of your case with their supervisor, your identity will not be revealed. Some therapists (myself included) carry confidentiality into the community. I inform clients that if I see them in any social setting, I will not greet them. I would not like to put my client in a situation where they have to explain how they know me. I am always open to speaking to clients outside of therapy, but they get to make first contact.
  • What kind of issues can counselling help with?
In general, you are welcome to discuss any issue with the counselor. People seek counseling for a wide range of concerns including, but not limited to: Depression Anxiety Low self-esteem / Lack of confidence Abuse Trauma Relationship issues (break ups, divorce, infidelity, loneliness, marital conflicts, adjustment issues, arguments, premarital concerns) Suicidal tendencies Eating disorders Workplace stress/burnout Family issues Addiction & substance abuse Counseling can provide guidance to address these concerns and work through them. It provides a safe space for people to express their troubles.
  • Why should I seek therapy?
People face several issues in their everyday lives. While they might be able to tackle most of these challenges by themselves, there might be some issues that go beyond their capacity to cope. This could leave them feeling stressed and helpless. This is where counseling plays an important role. People come to therapy for various reasons. It can aid in gaining clarity on personal matters, improving self-esteem, developing healthy coping mechanisms, and growing the capability to introspect. Therapy can also help in enhancing interpersonal skills such as communication and problem-solving abilities. People could seek therapy as a result of a crisis or to vent their feelings. Therapy helps one manage life’s varied challenges and live a more fulfilled life.
  • How many therapy sessions do I need?
The length of your treatment will depend on your unique circumstance. Sometimes, clients report feeling better after just one session. Speaking openly with a non-judgmental and supportive individual, such as a therapist, can provide you with relief almost immediately. However, effectively, therapy takes 5-12 sessions and sometimes longer to complete. Once you start sessions, new issues and angles can arise that you might want to explore. It is also possible to see improvement faster than you originally expected. So, it is best to keep an open mind over how long you might be in therapy, and discuss it with your therapist.
  • How many sessions do I need to take to figure out if a therapist is suitable for me?
It's vital to have a positive working relationship with your therapist, so it's recommended for the client and the therapist to meet 2-3 times before deciding whether or not the therapeutic relationship can continue. The therapist may provide the client with referrals of other specialists or trusted colleagues if they feel someone else might be better at working with the client.
  • What can I expect in the first session?
The first therapy session is unlike the other sessions as the client and the therapist are getting acquainted with each other. Trust is incredibly important in therapy, the foundation of which is laid in the first session. With time, the therapeutic relationship can grow to offer a powerful space for the client to explore themselves. The majority of the first session is spent in collecting information about the client’s past and specific concerns that motivated them to seek therapy. At this time, the therapist also tries to gain an understanding about the client’s goals and expectations. This allows the therapist to come up with an action-plan based on their treatment of similar concerns with other clients.
  • What is Psychotherapy?
Psychotherapy, also known as Talk Therapy, is a long-term treatment process focused on achieving insight into one’s troubled thoughts, emotions and behaviors. It allows people to explore themselves freely and discuss their challenges in a safe, non-judgmental environment with the help of a trained therapist. A therapist will not provide solutions or advice. Instead, they will encourage you to talk about your feelings and experiences, which can ultimately help you arrive at a better understanding of yourself and your circumstances. A therapist works in collaboration with the client to form a plan of action to address their concerns.
  • What are the benefits of online therapy?
Online therapy, also known as Remote Therapy offers access to mental health and counseling services via the internet. Why you should consider online therapy: Access to treatment isn't limited by location. As long as you have a reliable internet connection, you can talk to a therapist from home, or any place that feels comfortable to you. The additional stress of getting to a therapist’s office at a specific time, on a particular day, can be avoided. Being able to readily access a licensed mental health professional in a convenient way can help in reducing the stigma of reaching out for support. Virtual therapy also gives you access to a broader range of providers. Instead of being limited by location, now it's possible to focus on seeking help from a therapist who's the perfect fit for your specific needs. When you have to travel to appointments or take time off work to see a therapist, you may not be able to schedule as many sessions as you'd like. Since online therapy is so flexible and convenient, it becomes easier to schedule additional sessions when needed. Therapy can be intimidating. Being vulnerable or sharing your fears and concerns isn’t always easy. Doing these things in a strange or unfamiliar environment can be even more daunting. Remote therapy lets you have control over your environment, and you are more likely to be able to put yourself at ease during virtual sessions. Online therapy offers access to mental health treatment to people in rural or remote areas. Those who live in rural areas simply might not have access to any other form of mental health treatment because there are few to no mental health practices in their area.
